the purpose of this drill is to improve defensive line speed and set up. The field is set up with three tackle shields with a ball at the rear of each. offense and defense players lay on the ground at their respective cones facing away from the drill. the coach calls a number corresponding with a tackle shield and ball. defense sets up flat line defense rocks and dogs. offense sets up wing when the scrum half passes the ball defense launches. when the offense is tagged in possession of the ball the players return to their cones to start again.
speed to set up. flat line. launch as one. communication ("losers go quiet"). scrum half speed to ruck. numbers for the shields can be replaced with coloured cones and those can be changed randomly after each phase to encourage communication and thinking at speed.
