Tennis: Balance catch

DESCRIPTION

Player stands on a balance circle on one foot. Coach throws the ball to the player who catches it whilst balancing and passes it back.

COACHING POINTS

Keep a strong core and good posture
Balance is key here- if they start wobbling, allow them to adjust their position before throwing the ball.

PROGRESSION

Player can only throw and catch with one hand alternately.

Call Hand Drill:

Coach stands in front of the player and throws the ball. The player moves left and right and catches the ball.

However, when the coach throws the ball, they shout "right" or left", and the player must catch the ball with this hand, regardless of what side of the body the ball comes to.

Balance on one leg catch:

The coach stands in front of the player, and alternates throwing to the right and left side. The player jumps, catches the ball and keeps the balance on the outside leg. The player then repeats this pattern on both sides.

Balanced backhand throw:

Get the player to stand on balance platforms in a close stance. The coach then throws a medicine ball to the backhand side. The player should then imitate a backhand by throwing the ball back to the coach.

Backhand Drills

Balance the right:

3 cones are set behind the player on the right side. The player takes one ball and jumps backward on right leg toward the cone. The player places the ball on the cone and repeats this pattern to the rest of balls/cones.
