Flip It Warm Up - Rugby Drills...

Be brief when telling the players the laws of this game, it's important to get them moving quickly.

This is not a contact game.
Break your players into two teams, giving each team their own colour of bibs if necessary.
One team goes to attack, and one to defence.
Nominate a Scrum Half for each team.
There is no kicking in this game.
Normal laws of rugby apply e.g. a forward pass will result in the ball being turned over to the opposition.
If an attacking player is touched: they must go to ground, present the ball, two of their teammates ruck over (staying over the ball), and the Scrum Half moves the ball for the next phase of attack.
When you start playing this game make sure that the defence is employing your defensive pattern around the ruck. As the game develops consider telling the defenders that they must have one or more players at the back of the ruck, if they are not fast enough to do this - push them back 10 meters.
It’s important that defenders are employing their defensive pattern behind the primary defensive line.
Have attacking players do what they normally would at the ruck.
Depending on your goals decide on the number of touches you wish to allow e.g. unlimited is not a bad option as mistakes will be made!
When you feel the time is appropriate, usually during a ruck, blow you whistle and should FLIP IT – kicking in or throwing in a second ball to the back 3/2 defenders on the team currently in defence OR just kick it behind the defenders. The defensive team goes, without hesitation, into attack. The team that was attacking goes into defence and you or an assistant coach remove the other ball from play when you can. Ideally you might have two balls with different markings.
Don't hesitate to shape the game to focus on your session goals, and let us and other coaches know what worked for you!

I coach under 10's and I am struggling to get the boys?

I coach under 10's and I am struggling to get the boys to commit to the ruck and win quick ball. It either results in slow ball or more often than not lost ball. Can anyone suggest a drill to build up the team's confidence to compete in the ruck.

Hi Guys Though we all fully enjoyed it, We have just?

Hi Guys Though we all fully enjoyed it, We have just lost a tournament - mainly because the forwards were not offloading in contact and were getting turned over. Does anyone have a forwards type game I can use with the boys to play instead of drills, to strengthen their skills in this area? The team is a under 12 group. And I have 14 forwards. Thanks for you help in advance. Cheers Iain

Inclusive rugby - Any tips and advice from coaches who have experience coaching kids between 2-7 years and children with special needs

Hi folks, I have been coaching children from 7 to 16 years for along time. I now have a new challenge. We are opening rugby up for children from 2 years to 7 years. We will also be holding classes for children with special needs and would appreciate any tips or dialogue with coaches who have any experience. I look forward to exchanging views and results with any coaches willing to share. We will hold a few test sessions in the near future and will stay in touch. Many thanks. Kieron .Hong Kong. SEND U10s

Hi I have just taken on an U10s team for this comming season, the kids are great, in the group I have two players with autism and one with adhd, so I try and keep talking to a minimum and get them moving with the ball asap during sessions. These health conditions are not something I have had to learn about or deal with before, are there any other coaches that have experienced this that can offer any tips?

What a fantastic tool. The Chalkboard and session tools make an unbelievable difference in making training plans in both time and organization. I will be instructing all of my assistant coaches that this tool must be used for all sessions during the season, so that we may build a club coaching resource library.

Wes Campbell Rugby Coach Canada
