Community | Intercept 4 (Miss and Recover)

Sharon Garner Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Working in groups of 3. The feeders are passing a ball between themselves at a steady pace. The defending player goes for an intercept too early so the pass is delayed and is sent after they have exited on the other side. They then turn quckly recover to go for the very next pass to the moving original feeder. Practise coming from both directions and using both legs for a change of direction. Progressions: Moving feeder starts at 70% effort but then builds intensity. Take the drill to a space on court that is relevant to the positions that the players would be working in.

COACHING POINTS

Defender is ready to go - light on toes and knees, use of arms for momentum Watching ball and attacking player with ball possession. Make sure cone is within the range for them to be successful on their recovery intercept. Keep feet under body, avoiding a lunge onto the ball, light quick steps Turning to sight the ball on recovery as quick as possible. Looking to move towards the path of the ball. Naturally its will seem easier to push off outside leg to cut back in, but worth experimenting with both as may happen in match due to position on court, reaction time, etc.
