Community | 3 Zone Possession Game

Efrain Lara-Silva Coach, United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION

Objective: Improve team coordination, off-the-ball movement, and passing accuracy. Focus on transitioning between defense, midfield, and attack while maintaining possession and adhering to team formations. Setup:Field Markings: Divide the field into 3 horizontal quadrants (each approximately 40 yards long). Label the quadrants: Defensive, Midfield, and Attacking. Teams: Full 11v11 teams set up in their preferred positions and formation. Instructions:Possession Play: The goal for the attacking team is to maintain possession within their current quadrant by completing 10 consecutive passes. Once the 10 passes are completed, the attacking team can progress to the next quadrant (e.g., from midfield to the attacking third) and attempt to score. Defending Team: The defending team must regain possession, move the ball into their defensive quadrant, and complete 10 consecutive passes to transition to the midfield quadrant. Continue this process to advance to the attacking third. Scoring Opportunities: Once in the attacking third, teams have one minute to create a scoring opportunity. Resetting Play: If the defending team intercepts or recovers the ball, the sequence starts over in their quadrant. Coaches can also reset the play to highlight specific scenarios or tactical setups. Rules:Players must remain within their designated quadrant unless progressing to another (based on completed passes). Encourage quick transitions and forward passes once possession shifts between quadrants. Limit players to 1-2 touches in the defensive and midfield zones to promote faster ball movement.

COACHING POINTS

Coaching Points:Offensive Team: Passing and Movement: Ensure accurate, crisp passes with appropriate weight. Utilize triangles and passing lanes to maintain possession. Off-the-Ball Movement: Move into open spaces to provide passing options. Communicate with teammates to signal intent and positioning. Breaking Forward: Time runs effectively when transitioning between quadrants. Look for opportunities to split defenders and attack with intent. Defensive Team: Pressure and Cover: Work as a unit to apply pressure on the ball while covering passing options. Intercept and Transition: Anticipate passes to intercept and quickly transition to possession mode. Shape and Discipline: Maintain defensive formation and avoid overcommitting in any quadrant. Drill Progression:Start with unlimited touches and focus on completing passes in the quadrants. Introduce 1-touch passing in the midfield quadrant to increase intensity. Add conditions such as requiring a specific player or position to make the final pass before transitioning to the next quadrant.
